Bike Blessing

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows Ben Hur Lodge 870 held its first annual Bike Blessing on Sunday, May 7, 2006. Reverend Ronald Schrader presided over the outside blessing. Schrader is the Past Noble Grand of Ben Hur.

Approximately 50 people northern Illinois and Wisconsin rode their motorcycles to the event. Wives, friends and children also attended. Any type of bike was welcome for the blessing.

“Many of the members in our lodge are tradesmen,” said Schrader. “We turn no one away no matter what their religious affiliation might be. We want to help people in need.”

The crowd was solemn when Schrader opened the ceremony with a general prayer: “May the Lord bless you and keep you safe on this machine.” Part of the prayer said, “May The Lord be with you no matter what road of life you ride on. May He help keep the sun bright, and the rain off of your back.” After the prayer, Schrader walked to each motorcycle and spoke briefly with the owner. The service lasted about 30 minutes.

The Odd Fellows motto is "To Improve and Elevate the Character of Man".

The Lodge purchased the Baptist church and parsonage next to the Nippersink Library last year. “The labor was donated by members to fix up the building that needed quite a few repairs,” said Schrader.

Founded in the 1800’s The Odd Fellows is one of the world’s oldest fraternal organizations. Among the first records of the Order in America is that of five Brothers of the English Order who met in New York City in 1806, and formed Shakespeare Lodge No. 1.

Ongoing events for the organization include a monthly pancake breakfast held between 8 AM and 12 PM on the first Sunday of every month. The menu includes pancakes, custom made omelets, eggs, sausage, potatoes, coffee, milk, & juice.

A special BBQ picnic event is scheduled for this Sunday, May 14. Starting at 12 noon. The Nighthawks, a well-known blues band, will perform.

Regular Lodge meetings occur every Friday night with dinner at 7 PM.
